Importance of water quality testing and monitoring of a borehole.

Groundwater is composed of various physical, biological and chemical elements such as calcium, sodium, magnesium, chloride, fluoride, nitrates, sulphates and total dissolved solids. When some of these elements or compounds exceed certain quantities in water, they can result in various health problems to human beings and animals such as livestock. Presence of E. coli bacteria in water is an indication of faecal contamination. Consequently, it is essential to determine the water quality of a borehole prior to its use to ensure that it meets water quality standards for the intended use such as human consumption, livestock watering and irrigated farming. Periodic water sampling and analyses once or twice a year is essential to monitor water quality trends over time. Where water quality deterioration is noticed, remedial measures can be undertaken in time.
